When people see our matte graphite rig, the first question is usually about the sasquatch decal. The second is always the same. Why a box van and not a Sprinter? Fair question. Sprinters are the default answer in this world, and they earn it. But when we sat down to plan our second build, the box body won on almost every line of the list. Here is that list, including the parts that cut against us.

Square walls change the whole build

A Sprinter or Transit wall curves in two directions at once. Every cabinet, every panel, every run of insulation has to be templated, scribed, and shimmed against that curve. Builders spend real days just making flat things meet round things.

A box body is a rectangle. Flat walls, square corners, honest 90 degree angles. Our white cabinetry went in the way kitchen cabinets go into a house, flat against the wall with full-depth boxes behind the doors. That is why the galley in our build has real counter space instead of a curved sliver, and why the deep single-basin sink and induction cooktop sit in a countertop that actually works like one.

Insulation gets the same benefit. Flat panels, straight cuts, tight seams. No compound curves means fewer voids and less guesswork about what is hiding behind the wall.

The platform is cheap, so the interior gets the money

Used box vans and box trucks sell for meaningfully less than used Sprinters at similar mileage, because the buyer pool is smaller and nobody is romanticizing them. Ours started life as a bright yellow box truck. Nobody was bidding against us for it.

That gap matters because conversions are expensive no matter what you start with. Professional conversions across the industry commonly run $40k to $150k and up, and those are industry figures, not ours. Every dollar you do not spend on the badge is a dollar that can go into cabinetry, systems, and the parts of the rig you actually touch every day.

You can stand up, and it feels like a room

A box body gives you standing room without a roof raise and width without wheel-well gymnastics. The difference is hard to overstate once you live in it. Our build has a cushioned bench, a dinette with a wall-mounted swing table, and a wall-mounted TV, and none of it feels wedged in. It feels like a small cabin that happens to have a steering wheel.

That volume also makes the build easier to lay out. When the space is a clean rectangle, the floor plan is a floor plan, not a puzzle.

The tradeoffs, plainly

We will not pretend the box body wins everything.

Drag is real. You are pushing a wall through the air, and a slippery Euro van will beat you at the pump. If you drive long highway miles every week, that adds up.

Height is real. Measure your garage before you fall in love. Tight parking structures, some drive-throughs, and low carport ramps are off the table. We plan routes around it and it is a habit now, but it is a habit you have to build.

Badge appeal is real too. A Sprinter at a trailhead reads as adventure. A box van reads as a delivery route until you do something about it, and that perception follows you to resale.

Stealth is the flip side of the ugly duckling

Here is the thing about looking like a work truck: sometimes that is exactly what you want. We resprayed ours in full matte graphite, added four round LED pods across the cab-over face, an Iron Man 4x4 8-foot awning, and the sasquatch on a bike. Parked on a street with the awning stowed, it does not announce that anyone is sleeping inside. One Instagram commenter summed it up in three words: "Looks so Stealth!!"

If your trips run through towns, ski lots, and coast pullouts like ours do, blending in is not a consolation prize. It is a feature the Sprinter cannot buy back.

The short version: buy the box if you value interior space, build simplicity, and budget headroom over highway manners and curb cachet. We did, and the graphite rig is the proof we live with.
